Modules

At the end of each module, course participants will be able to perform the following:

Module 1: Digital Prepress Fundamentals (100 hrs)

  • Create job files
  • Perform file processing and computer housekeeping
  • Apply the basic tools in a graphic application program
  • Activate network connectivity
  • Learn troubleshooting and maintenance techniques for different computer systems

Module 2: Digital Imaging (120 hrs)

  • Perform text input/editing
  • Modify digital images, line arts and logos with understanding on image resolution, colour space and the characteristics of different types of originals
  • Create layout artwork using the most appropriate software
  • Create special effects on digital images
  • Understand and set up a basic colour management workflow

Module 3: Page Composition I (120 hrs)

  • Create pages with multiple columns and complex images
  • Import texts from a word-processing software
  • Position page elements
  • Verify job specifications against end-user requirements
  • Understand and apply advanced DTP techniques such as trapping and overprinting

Module 4: Page Composition II (120 hrs)
(Students must complete Module 3 in order to proceed to Module 4)

  • Set up trapping parameters with understanding on the characteristics of different types of printing jobs
  • Manage PDF files
  • Troubleshoot document problems
  • Set up print specifications with understanding on the different types of press and post press requirements
  • Setup and integrate a PDF workflow into prepress operations

Module 5: Image Scanning (100 hrs)

  • Calibrate monitor and scanner in relation to colour management
  • Set up scanning parameters with understanding of file format requirements
  • Scan jobs according to original types and with technical knowledge on image quality and scanning techniques, eg UCR, ACR, etc.
  • Evaluate scanned outputs and troubleshoot
  • Colour manage monitors and scanners through profile creation

Module 6: Image Editing (120 hrs)

  • Create special effects on image
  • Perform digital colour correction and retouching
  • Evaluate the reproduction quality of digital images
  • Troubleshoot simple software problems
  • Learn advanced Photoshop techniques for image manipulation

Module 7: Digital Page Imposition (120 hrs)

  • Create imposition templates with understanding of print job specifications and printing press requirements
  • Generate complex page impositions using latest imposition softwares, and with understanding on the various binding, finishing and press requirements
  • Output files to image-setter, plate-setter, printer/press
  • Evaluate and troubleshoot printing plates quality
  • Understand and setup an automated imposition workflow

Module 8: Prepress Output Evaluation (120 hrs)

  • Calibrate image-setter and colour proofer with understanding on colour management
  • Output electronic file or digital images to films and electronic media
  • Evaluate and troubleshoot output quality
  • Maintain output devices used in prepress
  • Setup and maintain a Quality Control System for output operations
